This fascinating talk explores two remarkable Anglo-Saxon treasures discovered in our area — the Cheddar Brooch and the Wedmore Ring.  Examined and discussed through the lens of practicing local goldsmith, Erica Sharpe.

A Fellow of the Institute of Professional Goldsmiths and qualified gemologist, Erica started her jewellery business in 1992 and has devoted her career to designing and making fine hand-crafted jewellery, both modern commissions and mastering ancient goldsmithing techniques.

She will tell us of her research and creative experimentation, helped by fellow craftsmen, experimental archeologists and the South West Heritage Trust, in trying to understand these pieces from a maker’s perspective, and what her discoveries have revealed about them.

She brings interesting insights (and opens many further questions) into how art and craft connect us to our shared cultural heritage, past and present.
